My 25 year old daughter had a break during her sophomore year of college and
cut herself so deeply on her upper arm she was evaluation for suicide risk.  We were given no information other than this due to HIPPA.  As she was a college athlete, her coach shared very minimal information; our daughter shared none.
We have come to believe from knowledgeable therapists that she fits the criteria for Borderline personality disorder; we see the behaviors too and while she is married, we have struggled in our relationship with her.  When things are good, they can be very good, however the bad times are frequent and incredibly difficult.

I look forward to connecting with others on this forum who understand.  I have been very private about my struggles as I fear judgement from others.

Our objective is to better understand the struggles our child faces and to learn the skills to improve our relationship and provide a supportive environment and also improve on our own emotional responses, attitudes and effectiveness as a family leaders

Hello Chily and welcome to the group. This is a great place to get the support you need. I am glad you are here. Other than the cutting is there anything else about your daughter's behavior you find troubling? How can we best support you?

Hi Chilly,
I'm new to the site as well. My daughter is 25 as well and has just had BPD diagnosis. Like you, I hardly speak to anyone about it. She forbids me to share any of her/our significant struggles with the wider family or my friends who could support, maybe.
I wanted to reply to you because my daughter also did a really deep cut on her leg about 12 months ago. It was so hard to deal with...of course, the physical damage (stitches, now badly scarred) but also the emotional damage and how she must have been feeling to do this. She had been drinking heavily at the time and in an awful relationship..
Our relationship is up or down, just like you and my H and I never know what's coming next. Usually some bad news, a fight with now ex boyfriend, police involved, etc, etc. It's gone on for years but at least, she now accepts the diagnosis. No help from mental health professionals yet. Sometimes the chaos of her life is overwhelming.
I feel for you in your situation and hope that the picture starts to become clearer. Lots of love, Sadiestar.x
