Agreed.  Someone giving you a gift (in this example, passing kind wishes) does not obligate you to reciprocate or respond.  You don't give someone a gift, then expect they owe you something in return.

So, you are not obligated to respond at all.  My advice, do NOT break NC!  You should only break NC on your own terms, because you actually want to (should this circumstance arise).
