for a long time i  identified with this.

but my therapist disagreed, she said i had the ability to leave and i chose not to.

she is right in a way, but i was powerless to leave for so long. and i was deceived.

I think the broader interpretation of Stockholm Syndrome does generally include situations in which a person is not (or is no longer) literally a hostage. Here's a helpful discussion:
