My husband was declared "disabled" by his group of Drs last January because he cannot function normally (he can hardly get out of the house to make it to his appointments (he just started going to them alone in November, but he can't make it with more than 1 "outing" a week). They all think it will take him a minimum of 5 years before he can even consider going back to work. So we need the help, I can't afford for us to live like we are right now for much longer... .  it's already been a year of playing catch up on everything.

I've been filling out forms for financial aid like there is no tomorrow, one of them, by the time I was done collecting all the requested info and documents + filling the form, it took me almost 6hrs.  I was in disbelief of the time it needed (granted it was very detailed and asked for info from the last 6 years). (the financial aid we could get can be as much as 1 000$ a month, and both have the possibility of retroactive funds from the date he was declared "disabled" and the time we get approved)

I'm glad I was filing the forms, he would have quit within seconds. They are a major pain to fill out (not counting that they can be expensive since, normally, Drs charge up to 125$ per form to fill out (I'm up to 4 forms per Dr and he has 3); the cost of express delivery with tracking to ensure it gets there), but the wait is excruciating. One form takes 6 months to respond, then another 26 weeks to respond to an appeal.  It's enough to drive a sane person mad.

Have any of you dealt with these forms?

Have any of you get any of the financial help?

How have you found the process?

Well, all I can say is that my husband has been attempting to get approved for disability for a long time now. He is on his third try and we have a lawyer and a doctor that supports his case. I was the one that had to fill out all the paperwork. Yes it is tiresome and I get bitter because he acts like I do nothing to help him. I think it's much harder to be approved for that stuff if the disability is mental. Cause they don't have physical proof that he is disabled. However he has a long history of mental illness and not being able to keep a job for longer than a few months. The last job he worked he ended up going phyco from the stress of it, he would call me in the middle of the night (it was a third shift job) and tell me he couldn't handle the stress. It wasn't a hard job by any means, he even said that. It was being around people that screwed with him.  He lasted 3 weeks at that job and quit. He was hospitalised about a week later for mental issues. And they said no to his claim.

My wife was approved for SS disability a couple of years ago. She had had an impressive string of involuntary hospitalizations and several almost-successful suicide attempts

All I can say about the paperwork is yeah ... .  I have no idea how someone with mental /emotional impairments could be expected to do this themselves. They really need someone to help them through it.

My H recently got approved for disability for multiple issues. he has a long history of both physical and mental issues. most of the right side of him is metal (pins in hands, elbow, shoulder, knee, ankle, and foot), and he is BPD and God knows what else. i thought it would take years and a lawyer to get approved. it only took a couple of months. we started filling them out when my right hand was broken (long story). so i couldn't write and he had to fill them out. anger was getting the best of him, and he wasn't nice on the  forms by any means. and when he went into the social security office he was a complete and total ass. i'm happy he got it, because i'm having financial problems by myself, since i'm the only one working. but on the other hand, he's always lucky like that. he's always able to get what he wants like a spoiled child.  i wish i could tell you his secret, but if i knew, he wouldn't have had to apply.

We've been at it for a year.

I don't know about you but on one application they can take a minimum of 26 weeks to respond... .  that's 6 months. 99% of the time, it's not approved. We are in the process of an appeal and instead of 12 weeks to respond, we just found out it's also a 26 week wait... .  we are only at week #10... .

dBPDh called them and really gave it to the poor guy answering the call. When he found out about the 26 weeks wait... .  again he asked him if he knew of anyone who had a mortgage that the bank accepted to wait a minimum of 26 weeks to get paid without losing the house, who could not eat for a minimum of 26 weeks and not die and who could convince the pharmacy to give him the medication he needs to keep him from killing himself  (he even added a "if not someone else in a complete psychosis moment" without paying for 6 months cause he didn't find that from anyone yet. He was extremely sarcastic and nasty to the poor guy. I can just imagine the guys face.

Hopefully, the other one is going to be easier and way faster since it's part of our life insurance.
