Is it normal

To not be able to get enough sleep after a break up. I can literally sleep 12 hours, get up, drink coffee, go back to bed.
I am emotionally drained. I hope this phase passes fast. Anyone else experience this?

Opposite here - I'm sleeping 2-4 hours most weeknights. A little more on the weekends.
Speaking of which, it's 5:15 a.m. my time. Goodnight.

Yes. Both Insomnia(lack of sleep) and Hypersomnia (excessive sleep) are signs of grieving and/or depression. Sleeping too much is Brain's attempt to slow and regulate the thinking activity so to prevent more exhausion. Some sleep less ,some sleep more. Its individual response . I sleep less in such stressful times as my Brain goes in overtime mode and keeps thinking about possible solutions etc. Because these emotions are tiring so the Brain tries to minimize them by going to sleep excessively and to recharge itself in some people.

When I was considering leaving her back at Christmas, I was sleeping 16 or so hours a day for almost a week. When she left me a little over a month ago, I was sleeping 3 or so hours a night for the first few weeks. Either way, it gets better.

These breakups definitely take a physical, emotional, and mental toll on us and sleep may be you body's way of helping you to heal. I wouln't worry too much about this right now; take care of yourself and sleep if you want to. Eventually this phase will pass and you will not need as much sleep.
I would encourage you to get outside and take a walk or do some other physical activity. The endorphins your body produces will make you feel better and give you more natural energy. Bottom line is you've been through a traumatic time so be kind to yourself.

My patten has been one of being awake to the point of exhaustion (24-32 hours at a time) and then sleeping for 12-16 hours. Rinse, repeat... .

I was contemplating this very thing today! I'm alternating between hypersomnia and insomnia too. I'm a wreck! Okay, so this is normal and it gets better... . good to know (and thank heavens!)
