possible starting medication monday? any to avoid?
«

We meet with a psychiatrist Monday for possible medication initiation. My dd is a cheerleader (flyer) and refuses to take anything that causes weight gain.
She needs help mostly with regulation of emotions, moods, anxiety, and improvement of social functioning.
Are there combinations you have found to work well or things she should avoid?
She is taking Focalin XR daily as well, Biotin, Omega 3, and 5-HTP and a multivitamin.
Thanks

2girls3canines,
Please be sure to report all that she takes including all the supplements to the doctor. And, everyone is different when it comes to medications. Lamictal is known as weight neutral. And, Topomax is weight neutral, or may suppress appetite.
My daughter actually gained weight on Topomax. Weight gain on that is unusual.
It is a lot of trial and error to find the right med combo.

As the PP said everyone is different and responds differently to various meds. Our 14 y/o is medicated for pretty much the same reasons as yours will be and so far the combo that has worked best for her is Prozac and Abilify. Abilify unfortunately is known for causing possible weight gain because it is an anti-psychotic and those slow down metabolism. It can be avoided, at least to a certain extent, by remaining active and it sounds like your DD is. Our DD plays softball and competes on an after school competitive athletic team, so her weight gain has been minimal. That has been a concern for us too because our DD has a history of eating disorders. I am on Effexor, which is known for not causing weight gain. I actually lost 6 pounds doing nothing else the first month I was on it! Like Prozac, it is an anti-depressant/anti-anxiety. Good luck with your decision on Monday!
