I think one interpretation us that they were already leaving you much earlier than the actual breakup. They mirror you and idealize you, but at a certain point even when the cracks start to show in their minds, they are still trying to keep up the facade. Then when it finally cracks irrevocably they have to run to avoid the emotional fallout.

It's been written by one person with BPD that their feelings are so intense they feel like one large exposed raw nerve ending. So instead of dealing with the pain, they have dysfunctional coping mechanisms that involve running away and/or finding another "love" interest to soothe the pain. It doesn't make sense to you or me but that's because a pwBPD thinks and feels in disordered and alien ways.
