I checked into a hotel for a week or so... . I'm not really sure how long at this point. This is the first time taking time out for non-business trip reason and the kids are aware.

I will be seeing the kids this afternoon.

Any tips on what to say to them?  6 and 8yrs.

I want to be honest and just tell them that I'm so sorry that mommy and daddy have been fighting so much, and that mommy is really worn down and needs a break from me and the fighting.    That I love them so much and that they are amazing, kind, funny, and smart and that I will miss them everyday, when I'm away.

Then when they ask "but when will you be back home daddy?"  What do I say?

I'm not a pro, but when I had my wife move out, I explained to my daughter that I couldn't stay with her mom. That we had made each other unhappy and needed to be apart at least for a while. I reassured her that we both loved her, and that  would never change even if mom and dad never lived together again. She did ask how long, and I told her I really didn't know,  but that right now we needed to be apart and how long was a decision we would make later on.

She has handled it well. She has plenty of peers who's parents have divorced and remarried.
