I am the adult child of a BPD mom, and would like to start therapy for myself. I thought it would be helpful to find a therapist who is experienced with the issues faced by the children of BPD parents. Can anyone recommend a good psychiatrist/psychologist in the NYC area, or offer suggestions on where to look?

If anyone has been in therapy before and can offer advice on whether or not they found it important to have a therapist that has experience with these issues, or whether the sorts of issues many children of BPD's face (boundary setting, depression, intimacy problems) can be just as readily helped by any good psychologist, regardless of their experience with this particular topic.

To add a little more information to the above, my mom refuses to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis but me and my sister have been convinced she's BPD since learning about it. We were convinced she's BPD until 3 years ago, when the stress of her golden child (me) cutting off contact led her into psychosis and delusions which made us think she is schizophrenic, like her long lost sister. For example, she started to believe terrorists were plotting to get her, pineapples were bombs, I was wearing bombs under my clothes, etc. As far as I know there are no auditory/visual hallucinations just delusions and loss of contact with reality, and extreme paranoia. Does this mean she is BPD or schizophrenic? We're not sure. She sure fit the bill for BPD before the extreme delusions/psychosis set in. But now I don't know whether to look for a therapist for adult kids of BPD parents, schizophrenic parents, or whether this criteria is irrelevant and I should just find a good therapist.

(Oh, and this therapist would have to be covered by MetroPlus, Emblem Health, or one of the plans offered under the Affordable Care Act for New York since I'll be signing up through that.)

Thank you!

Do you or your mother have an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) available to you? Usually they're offered by employers to anyone in the employee's household. I found my T through my company's EAP referral service.
