Hello

I am a 29 yr old daughter of a borderline mother. I have recently been enlightened by my current therapist that my mother has many BPD traits along with narcissistic qualities. There seems to be plenty of reading material regarding the understanding of BPD and how to handle your relationship with the person who has BPD. I am struggling to find more material that covers the long term effects on the child of a BPD parent and steps or guides to help the adult child heal and recover from the deep emotional and mental scars from BPD parent. Specifically I am hoping to find more details on what steps can be taken to fix what's been broken inside of me so that it doesn't ruin the rest of my life, especially my relationships with others in friendship or romantically. Self worth, self esteem, co dependence are all topics that have many books written on them but I'm searching for ones that pertain to those being a result of BPD parenting. Also any groups or websites would be appreciated.

The best to you all and I'm thankful to have found this site.

Hi! Welcome to BPD Family!

A book I purchased recently called "The Narcissistic Family: Diagnosis and Treatment" by Stephanie Donaldson-Pressman, has been of immense help to me in my understanding.

The book is aimed at those who work in the field of psychology, but I feel this gives it an added bonus when relaying treatment.

This book also validated alot of what I felt, which is always a good thing when on this journey!

Hi McBreezy86!

Welcome to our family! I'm glad you have found us.

The first book I stumbled upon regarding BPD has been the most helpful to me. I often look at it as my BPD bible because of the significant information that has been helpful to me. Extremely validating. It is 'Surviving a Borderline Parent' by Freda Friedman and Kimberlee Roth. The subtitle is 'How to Heal Your Childhood Wounds, Build Trust, Boundaries, and Self Esteem.'

Also on the right hand side of this page you will find The Survivors Guide which is helpful as you walk this journey to understanding and healing. It is not necessarily linear but will guide you along the way.

Hope that helps! I am very glad that you are seeing a T. The uBPD in my life was my mom, and seeing a T has helped me to work through many of the affects of being raised in such an environment.

Please let me know if you decide to read the book. I'd love to know what you think.

Hey McBreezy86:

I'm thinking that many relatives of BPDs see issues they need to work on in their own lives.  Whether we may have inherited some BPD tendencies due to genetics, or by nature of exposure to BPDs.  Most of us have something to work on.   One way to approach it is to list the things you want to work on.  There are likely multiple therapy styles to use to work on the issue.

I'm in therapy right now.  A couple of weeks ago, I asked my therapist for some suggested reading material for the problem of "worrying".  She recommened a couple of books for me:  The Worry Cure by Robert Leahy and The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris.

When I searched for these book on the Internet, I did a little general research on the "best" therapy books.  I checked out several books and read customer reviews on Amazon.  I, also, checked out Amazon's reference of "Customers who bought book _________, also bought book ________.    I ended up buying a couple of professional books, one on DBT Therapy and the 2nd on ACT.  The three books below have handouts/worksheets and might match what you are looking for.  There is a lot of material there.  My plan is to find a few exercises to start with and to try and spend part of a therapy session reviewing one exercise at a time.  You should be able to go to Amazon.com and see the table of contents for the books and get some idea if any of them have exercises/therapy styles that you might find helpful.

DBT SKILLS TRAINING - HANDOUTS AND WORKSHEETS, By Marsha M. Linehan:

I got this book as a Kindle Book.  After I purchase the electronic book, I found that I could go to the publisher's website and gain access to printouts for the book at the following website:

www.guilford.com/companion-site/DBT-Skills-Training-Handouts-and-Worksheets-Second-Edition/9781572307810

ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT) - The Big Book of ACT Metaphors, by Jill A Stoddard (+ 2 more authors)

I got the Kindle version of this book as well. You can go to the publisher's website for this one as well and get a 17-page handout/workbook.  You have to register at this website to get the handout, and have to register the book, but I was able to register it, even though I purchased the book via Amazon.com.

THE HAPPINESS TRAP (Based on ACT Therapy):

I, also bought the book, The Happiness Trap.  If you go to the website below, you can print out several handouts/workbook sheets:
