It started 3 years ago, but she's had traits her whole life. She's desperate for attention, manipulative, and narcissistic. She's now accusing family members of awful things and none of us believe her. I'm terrified that she's going to tear our family apart. She's gone, she's not herself anymore. Is it normal that it feels like a switch flipped? This is the first I've considered a personality disorder. Don't know what to do or help my devsastated parents. This is killing them.

Hey Emeliz and welcome
So glad you reached out, and it sounds like your sis could definitely be BPD or some kind of disordered thinking. We call this the "smear campaign" when a BPD wages a war against the people they are the closest to. It's confusing and difficult to be on the receiving end of it... .But it isn't out character for a person with BPD. To them it's the way they deal with emotions that are so far out of wack and out of control they don't know which end is up. She can definitely stir up trouble, is she getting any help?

My BPD little sis is comorbid Bipolar too (fun!), so she tends to be cyclic with the verbal abuse and irrationality. I never know what I'm going to get with her, so I've had to just back off and protect my own mental state and my family. It's really sad and such a huge loss. Just try to remember that she is SICK, and try not to take any of it personally.

Peace!

Hi Emeliz,

It becomes clear from your post that you are finding it very hard dealing with this situation. I can understand why you are struggling so, dealing with a disordered family-member can indeed be very challenging.

You say it started 3 years ago, but that she exhibited traits since way before that. Did she ever get any help for her issues? Did she perhaps ever get diagnosed with a disorder?

You mention that "she's gone" and liken this to when a switch is flipped. How long have you felt this way about your sister? Are you talking about these entire last 3 years that you you feel she just isn't herself anymore?

Dealing with accusations you believe are false isn't easy. Does your sister have a history of making false accusations?
