Hello all,

The learning curve has been intense but I'm doing ok with it.  Would like input on some questions that have come up.

Is it common among folks suffering from BPD to have negative speech towards themselves?  I have caught wBPD speaking to herself and in my estimation it was / is negative.  Statements along the lines of

" Oh come on! That was so stupid!"
"Why did you do that (insert first name)"
"I can't do that"
Oh geez... Stop f-ing up!

then there are the physical actions as well, she will say "knock on wood" and when she says that she knocks on her own head.

Did find out that there was a period of time where she was separated from her mother after birth, she had low weight and it was about 5 days or so until the hospital released her to her family.  Would this have anything to do with the BPD?

It's really frustrating at times.

My thanks for any and all answers

Yes.   at one level - BPD is a disorder of shame and blame.    a pattern of responses and reactions about 'not being good enough' to be loved.   of course, it's not the only thing going on but it's certainly part of it.

Did find out that there was a period of time where she was separated from her mother after birth, she had low weight and it was about 5 days or so until the hospital released her to her family.  Would this have anything to do with the BPD?

There is no one single answer that all experts agree on.    Research and study is still going on.    The best available information we have now is genetics may play a role, environmental factors may play a role,  serotonin abnormalities and excess activation of the limbic system can come into play.    Or some combination of all of the above.

Hey StartingHealing!

I agree with babyducks about the role of shame and blame in bpd.

I would also add that a pwbpd has a tendancy to see the world and people as black or white (splitting) and it also applies to themselves. So, for instance, if a pwbpd faces an obstacle that they have difficulty overcoming,  is disappointed about themselves or fails at something, it can emotionnally trigger them so they will see themselves as all bad, thus having a negative speech about themselves. It can also be aggravated if they have high and unrealistic expectations about themselves (ex: I have to be perfect in any way at all times).
