My husband has been in ipo dbt for months.  He's no longer cutting himself but is now lecturing me about human behavior as though dbt made him a guru.  He is also now refusing to speak to me and just does not respond to anything.  Its bizarre in a whole new way.  Im glad he's not cutting himself but stonewalling and high horses are hardly what I thought DBT would do.   Is stonewalling and  being a pompous ass an outcome that you've seen.

The general thinking is that DBT is a life long thing - where there will be moments that require more intense intervention from a professional and others, hopefully, that can be simply maintained on one's own.  Therapy can take a rather long time and requires a lot of effort and energy at times. This is why therapists who work with a BPD / NPD clientele are often in therapy themselves because it is such taxing work.

Think of this like your husband really needing to see a nutritionist. He changes his diet. At the beginning of it all, he really needs to report weekly to the nutritionist. If, and I say, IF, he is able to stick to the new diet, the symptoms of his condition eventually change. But the core root of his dietary issues NEVER change. He MUST ALWAYS stick to the new diet. And, of course, there will always be relapses at certain times of the year, etc...  From time to time, he may need to back to the nutritionist if things relapse.

DBT treatment of BPD is like that.

What do you think?

I would guess there’s a chance that when someone gets treatment and improves their BPD symptoms, they are left with their underlying personality which might not be as pleasant as their loved ones hoped, specifically since they probably remain deeply insecure and this itself can cause a person to be hard to get along with.
